D Gukesh: Tamil Nadu MP wants PM Modi to waive tax from prize money won by chess world champion, says report

D gukesh

Tamil Nadu Congress MP R. Sudha has called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi to waive the tax on the prize money won by chess prodigy D Gukesh, the newly crowned World Chess Champion. Gukesh, who recently became the youngest-ever world champion at just 18, is set to receive a prize of ₹11.45 crore. However, his tax liability on the winnings amounts to ₹4.8 crore.

In a letter addressed to PM Modi and Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, Sudha highlighted the significant financial burden such taxes impose on sports achievements. She drew attention to instances during the Congress government when cricketing icons such as Sachin Tendulkar and Ravi Shastri were granted tax exemptions on their earnings.

Proposal for Additional Rewards

Sudha also urged the government to honor Gukesh with a cash award to celebrate his remarkable achievement. “Recognizing Gukesh with a reward will not only honor his success but also inspire countless young Indians to excel in chess and other sports,” she wrote.

Additionally, the MP requested Parliament to adopt a resolution lauding Gukesh’s historic victory. She noted that his feat has placed India firmly on the global chess map and brought immense pride to the nation.

A Historic Achievement

Gukesh’s triumph in Singapore, where he defeated reigning champion Ding Liren with a score of 7.5-6.5, makes him only the second Indian to claim the title after Viswanathan Anand. His victory has been celebrated nationwide, with Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin hosting a grand felicitation ceremony in Chennai. At the event, the Chief Minister presented Gukesh with a cheque for ₹5 crore in the presence of Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin and chess legend Viswanathan Anand.

Gukesh’s Humility and Dedication

Despite the accolades and financial rewards, Gukesh remains grounded. In an interview with FIDE, the chess prodigy reflected on his journey. “I started playing chess out of pure love for the game. Money isn’t the reason I play chess,” he said. He acknowledged the sacrifices made by his parents during the early years of his career, adding, “Now, we’re more comfortable, and my parents no longer have to worry about finances.”

The teenager’s dedication and humility have struck a chord with fans and aspiring players alike, making him a role model for the next generation of chess enthusiasts.

As calls for tax relief and further recognition grow louder, Gukesh’s achievement continues to inspire dreams across the nation.
