The Mega Millions jackpot has climbed to an astounding $1.15 billion, making it one of the largest prizes in the lottery’s history. The jackpot swelled after no one managed to match all six numbers in the Christmas Eve drawing.
This historic prize marks the fifth-largest jackpot ever in the history of Mega Millions, adding extra excitement to the upcoming Friday drawing. Winners can opt for a lump-sum cash payout of an estimated $516.1 million, as per the lottery organizers.
A Billion-Dollar Holiday Gift
Joshua Johnston, lead director of the Mega Millions Consortium, shared the excitement in a news release, stating,
“We know that many people will likely receive tickets to Friday’s drawing as holiday gifts, and what a gift that would turn out to be if you ended up with a ticket worth a $1.15 billion jackpot.”
How to Play the Mega Millions
Playing Mega Millions is simple and accessible. Here’s what you need to know:
Buy Tickets: Tickets can be purchased at local convenience stores, gas stations, or grocery stores in participating states. In select states, tickets can also be purchased online.
Pick Numbers:
Choose five white ball numbers ranging from 1 to 70.
Select one gold Mega Ball number between 1 and 25.
Cost: Each play costs $2.
Add-Ons: You can increase your non-jackpot winnings by purchasing the Megaplier for an additional $1 per play.
Tickets must be purchased before the cut-off time, which varies by state.
Odds of Winning
While the dream of winning a billion-dollar jackpot is thrilling, the odds are steep: approximately 1 in 302.6 million. However, smaller prizes ranging from $2 to $1 million can also be won by matching fewer numbers.
