BCCI Introduces New Practice Session Guidelines Ahead of IPL 2026
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has released a fresh set of practice-session guidelines for franchises ahead of the upcoming Indian Premier League 2026 season. The new rules aim to ensure fair training conditions for all teams while protecting the quality of pitches throughout the tournament.
With the IPL set to begin on March 28, the governing body has introduced stricter regulations around net practice, pitch usage, and practice matches. The guidelines were shared with all franchises through a detailed document outlining how teams should conduct their training sessions during the tournament.
No Shared Nets for Teams
One of the most significant changes in the new guidelines is that teams cannot use nets that have already been used by their opponents during practice sessions.
According to the BCCI directive, each team must be provided with fresh nets during their allotted practice time. Even if one team finishes their training early, the opposing team will not be allowed to use the same practice wicket or range-hitting strip.
This rule has been introduced to ensure that all teams practice under equal and fair conditions, preventing any advantage that might come from using already-prepared nets.
Limits on Practice Matches
The BCCI has also imposed restrictions on practice games conducted by franchises. Teams will be allowed to play a maximum of two practice matches, and these matches can only be held with prior approval from the board.
If a team chooses to conduct a practice match under floodlights, its duration cannot exceed three and a half hours. These games must also take place on side wickets rather than the main match pitch.
No Practice on the Main Square Before Home Matches
To preserve the playing surface, the BCCI has strictly prohibited teams from conducting practice sessions or practice matches on the main square in the four days leading up to their first home match.
If necessary, the state cricket association will provide an alternative practice ground for the home franchise during this period at no additional cost.
Net Allocation and Range-Hitting Practice
Teams will be allocated two practice nets and one additional wicket for range hitting during their scheduled practice sessions. These range-hitting wickets can be used for activities such as batting drills, bowling run-ups, throwdowns, and other training exercises.
The home team will also receive priority in choosing practice sessions, although the BCCI has stated that visiting teams’ travel schedules and match commitments will also be taken into consideration.
Conflict Resolution for Practice Timings
In cases where both teams want to practice at the same time, the BCCI has outlined a conflict-resolution process.
Team managers will first attempt to resolve the scheduling clash themselves. If an agreement cannot be reached, the board will step in and assign separate time slots—usually splitting the practice window into two equal sessions—to ensure both teams get fair access to the ground.
Focus on Pitch Preservation
The primary goal of these new guidelines is to maintain high-quality playing surfaces throughout the IPL season.
Indian venues often host a full domestic season before the IPL begins, which can leave pitches worn out. By limiting practice usage and introducing separate nets, the BCCI hopes to reduce wear and tear while ensuring optimal conditions for matches.
A More Structured Approach to IPL Preparation
The latest regulations reflect the BCCI’s effort to bring more structure and professionalism to practice sessions during the IPL. With teams preparing intensively for one of the world’s most competitive T20 leagues, these guidelines aim to create a balanced environment where every franchise gets equal training opportunities.
As IPL 2026 approaches, teams will now have to adapt their preparation strategies within these new rules, ensuring they maximize their practice time while following the board’s strict protocols.
