Delhi CM Rekha Gupta Responds to Waterlogging Crisis: ‘It Will Take Time to Address Problems Inherited from the Last Government’

Waterlogging Crisis

Delhi Experiences Pan-City Waterlogging During Heavy Rainfall

After heavy unseasonal rains on Friday, which have caused severe traffic disruption and difficulties to people commuting to and from work, Delhi has been suffering with widespread waterlogging. The Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, while reacting to the crisis, termed the waterlogging a “disease” bequeathed by the outgoing government, thus admitting the enormity of the problem. She, however, assured the public that the government is actively working towards solving the waterlogging problem but that the remedial efforts would take some time.

CM Rekha Gupta Visits Affected Areas and Promises Action

On Friday, CM Gupta visited several waterlogged areas, including Majnu Ka Tilla, to assess the rain’s impact and monitor efforts to address the crisis. Speaking to the media, Gupta said, “We inherited this problem from the previous government, and it will take time to resolve. Today, I am driving on roads where thousands of Delhiites face traffic jams. The government has the resources to fix these issues. Officials are actively working to clear the roads. It is our responsibility to address these problems promptly.”

Gupta stressed that the government has deployed authorities across Delhi. Their task is to spot waterlogging-prone areas and apply quick solutions. “I am on the ground with the concerned officials to solve this issue,” she said in an X social media post.

Government Increases Efforts to Address Waterlogging

The Delhi CM’s promise to resolve the waterlogging issue comes as a complement to the efforts being made by various government departments. Minister Parvesh Verma also inspected many of the waterlogged areas, including the Minto Bridge, to assess the situation. Verma assured that four pumps had been operational close to Minto Bridge to clear the stagnant water. “The unusual rains resulted in some water accumulation in various parts of Delhi. After 5:30 am, I went to various affected places. When I reached Minto Bridge, I found that all four pumps were functioning well,” Verma added. He also reported that a pipe had burst near Minto Bridge, which was being fixed in a hurry.

Moreover, Verma pointed out that drain cleaning is going on continuously with the assistance of various agencies like PWD, MCD, DJB, NDMC, and IFC to avoid waterlogging.

Severe Weather Causes Widespread Disruptions in Delhi

The early morning rainfall brought waterlogging as well as traffic jams and delayed flights across the entire capital, hindering routine activities. The Indian Meteorological Department, alias IMD, issued a weather warning of severe conditions and advised citizens to take necessary precautions for safety. Such a warning from the IMD paints a grim picture of the weather and maintains vigilance at this moment.

Constant Efforts to Prevent Waterlogging Throughout the City

In response to the waterlogging crisis, the government has assigned officials to identify affected areas and undertake measures to stop further damage. Gupta and Verma have assured residents that their government is working on long-term solutions to reduce such occurrences. Short-term measures, like improving drainage systems and increasing pump operations, are already underway.

Residents Hopeful for Permanent Solutions

Though the problem persists, residents of Delhi are optimistic that the government’s quick response will yield a permanent solution to the waterlogging issue. With CM Gupta and Minister Verma actively involved in addressing the situation, the government has assured that it will make the issue a priority and make significant improvements within the coming days.

As the city tackles the aftermath of unseasonal rains, it remains to be seen how soon the government will resolve the waterlogging issues and improve the experience for Delhiites in the coming days. Source aninews
