Honda Set to Launch First EV Two-Wheeler in FY25

Honda is set to debut its first electric two-wheeler in FY25, with speculation pointing to the launch of an Electric Activa. Exciting EV news ahead!

The electric vehicle market in India is experiencing significant growth, particularly in the two-wheeler segment, as consumer interest in electric scooters surges. In this evolving landscape, Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India (HMSI) is preparing to make its much-anticipated entry into the electric two-wheeler market by the end of FY 2024-25. Despite being a dominant player in the internal combustion engine (ICE) motorcycle and scooter market, Honda has yet to introduce an electric two-wheeler, making this launch a pivotal moment for the brand.

Yogesh Mathur, Director of Sales & Marketing at HMSI, announced the company’s intent to enter the EV space during the 64th annual session of the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers Association. While the specific model has not been confirmed, the growing demand for electric scooters strongly suggests that Honda may introduce an electric variant of its iconic Activa. Given the Activa’s established brand presence in India, this move could significantly impact Honda’s position in the electric vehicle sector.

In addition to the anticipated Activa EV, Honda is also set to launch the flex-fuel powered CB300F, which was showcased at the Bharat Mobility Show. This motorcycle can run on fuel blended with up to 85 percent ethanol, showcasing Honda’s commitment to exploring alternative fuel options alongside electric mobility.

The timing of Honda’s entry into the electric segment aligns with a broader trend in the Indian two-wheeler industry, which has surpassed initial growth forecasts. While the industry was projected to grow by 10-12 percent this year, it has already recorded a robust 16 percent increase. The scooter segment, in particular, is witnessing rapid growth at a rate of 24 percent, outpacing motorcycles, which are growing at 13 percent.

As Honda prepares for its electric debut, Mathur emphasized the company’s open-minded approach to future fuel types. The company is actively exploring various options, including electric vehicles, flex-fuel, and other alternative fuels, indicating a versatile strategy in a diversifying market. Honda aims for one-third of its lineup to be electric by 2030, reflecting its commitment to sustainability and innovation.

Currently, the electric two-wheeler market in India is growing at an annual rate of 8 percent. Honda’s foray into this space, particularly with a model like the Activa EV, could not only enhance its market share but also contribute to the broader adoption of electric mobility in the country. As the company gears up for this transition, it remains focused on adapting to the changing landscape of the two-wheeler industry, ensuring that it meets the evolving needs of consumers while maintaining its reputation for quality and reliability.
