Manmohan Singh, India’s Former PM and Economic Visionary, Passes Away at 92
New Delhi: Dr. Manmohan Singh, India’s former Prime Minister and the architect of the country’s economic liberalization, passed away on Thursday at the age of 92. The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi, where he was undergoing treatment, confirmed his demise in a statement.
“With deep sorrow, we announce the passing of Dr. Manmohan Singh, former Prime Minister of India, at the age of 92. He was under treatment for age-related conditions and suffered a sudden loss of consciousness at home on December 26, 2024,” the statement read.
Emergency medical intervention was initiated immediately at his residence. He was rushed to AIIMS at 8:06 pm, but despite extensive resuscitative efforts, he was declared dead at 9:51 pm.
Dr. Manmohan Singh served as India’s Prime Minister for two consecutive terms from 2004 to 2014, heading the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA). Known for his humility, intellect, and transformative policies, Dr. Singh’s tenure is often credited with steering India towards sustained economic growth.
The former Prime Minister is survived by his wife, Gurcharan Kaur, and their three daughters.
Tributes Pour In
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences on X (formerly Twitter), praising Dr. Singh’s contributions to India’s governance and economic progress.
“India mourns the loss of one of its most distinguished leaders, Dr. Manmohan Singh ji. From humble beginnings, he emerged as a respected economist and left an indelible mark on India’s economic policy as Finance Minister and later as Prime Minister. His insights and wisdom enriched our nation,” PM Modi wrote.
PM Modi reminisced about their interactions when he served as the Chief Minister of Gujarat, saying, “Dr. Singh’s humility and wisdom always stood out. In this moment of grief, my thoughts are with his family and admirers. Om Shanti.”
Sonia Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, senior leaders of the Congress party, rushed to AIIMS upon learning of his hospitalization. Several political leaders across party lines also expressed their grief and paid homage to the late leader.
A Legacy of Economic Reforms
An economist of global repute, Dr. Singh was instrumental in introducing the landmark economic reforms of 1991, which liberalized the Indian economy. His calm and composed demeanor earned him respect even among political adversaries.
Dr. Singh’s passing marks the end of an era in Indian politics, leaving behind a legacy of dedication, vision, and humility. Funeral arrangements will be announced by his family soon.
