Meeting of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Mauritius Prime Minister Ramgoolam: New dimensions in bilateral relations

Prime Minister Narendra Modi held an important meeting with Mauritius Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam, in which bilateral relations were reviewed and new avenues were explored to further strengthen the special relationship between the two countries.

In this meeting held on Tuesday evening, Prime Minister Modi thanked Prime Minister Ramgoolam for being awarded Mauritius’ highest civilian honor ‘Grand Commander of the Order of the Star and Key of the Indian Ocean’.

PM Modi wrote in a post on Twitter (formerly X), “Had a wonderful meeting with the Prime Minister of Mauritius, Dr. Navinchandra Ramgoolam this evening. Thanked him for inviting me to attend the National Day celebrations of Mauritius and for his special hospitality during my visit. I express my deep gratitude for being conferred with Mauritius’ highest civilian honour.”

MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal also posted on X, saying, “Prime Minister @narendramodi held useful talks with the Prime Minister of Mauritius @Ramgoolam_Dr, reflecting the strength of the partnership between India and Mauritius. PM Modi expressed gratitude for Mauritius’ decision to confer on him its highest civilian honour, the Grand Commander of the Order of the Star and Key of the Indian Ocean.”

Emphasis on advancing the interests of the Global South

During this meeting, Prime Minister Modi emphasized that India is a trusted and respected development partner of Mauritius and both the countries will continue to work together to advance the interests of the Global South.

He said, “The relationship between India and Mauritius is not only historical but is also based on shared values, mutual trust and a vision of a bright future. Prime Minister Ramgoolam has always led our relations and under his leadership our partnership is reaching new heights in every field.”

Prime Minister Modi also said that the relations between India and Mauritius have no limits and both the countries will continue to work together for the welfare of their citizens and regional peace and security. He said, “If there is one country in the world that has full rights over India, it is Mauritius. There is no limit to our relations and there is no limit to our aspirations. In the future also, we will continue to work together for our people and regional peace and security.”

Priority to maritime security and development with Mauritius

In his address, Prime Minister Modi recalled that during his last visit to Mauritius, he had proposed the SAGAR (Security and Growth for All in the Region) vision. He described Mauritius as India’s close maritime neighbour and an important partner in the Indian Ocean region.

“Mauritius is our close maritime neighbour and an important partner in the Indian Ocean. During my last visit, I presented the SAGAR vision, which focuses on regional development, security and prosperity. I believe that the countries of the Global South should unite and raise their voice. During our presidency of the G20, we kept the priorities of the Global South at the centre and invited Mauritius as a special guest,” Prime Minister Modi said.

Discussion on India-Mauritius relations at dinner

After this meeting, Prime Minister Modi also attended a special dinner hosted by the Prime Minister of Mauritius. On this occasion, he shared views on the depth and breadth of India-Mauritius relations.

He said, “Our partnership is not only based on the historical links of the past, but it also rests on our shared values, trust and aspirations for a bright future. Mauritius Prime Minister Ramgoolam has always taken the lead in strengthening these relations and under his leadership our partnership is touching new heights in all areas.”

India and Mauritius have close cultural and economic relations. India is cooperating in many development projects in Mauritius, which include infrastructure development, education, health and maritime security. This visit of Prime Minister Modi is considered an important step towards further strengthening the relations between the two countries.

During this meeting, the leaders of both the countries agreed to find new areas of cooperation in the future and further strengthen their partnership in trade, investment, education and maritime security.
