UNSC Will Convene Soon Over Indo-Pak Tensions Following Pahalgam Terror Attack

Pahalgam terror attack

Today Pahalgam Latest Update: The UNSC President for May and Greece’s Permanent Representative Evangelos Sekeris made a statement that the United Nations Security Council is likely to convene soon over heightening tensions between India and Pakistan.

That it is changing rather quickly, as per him, and if it is formally requested, the UNSC is willing to convene a meeting “sooner rather than later” for the sharing of member positions and potential assistance to defuse the situation.

“This can be a time to voice concerns and help tone down tensions,” said Sekeris, who added, “We are already gearing up. It’s our first day in office.”

Condemnation of Pahalgam Terror Attack

Referring to the terror attack on Pahalgam, Sekeris denounced the attack where innocent civilians lost their lives. The UNSC also issued a statement denouncing the act and offering condolences to the governments of Nepal and India, and to the families of the victims.

“We condemn terrorism in all forms and wherever it takes place. This attack was reprehensible,” said the UNSC President.

He also appreciated that India continues to be a victim of cross-border terrorism and insisted on justice for the victims.

Call for De-escalation and Dialogue

Sekeris was worried about rising bilateral tensions between India and Pakistan—two nuclear-armed neighbors. He was among other international voices advocating for de-escalation and dialogue, cautioning against any move that could turn the situation out of hand.

“India and Pakistan are both significant actors. It’s in the interest of the region that tensions don’t become further heightened,” he added.

UN Chief Places Good Offices at Disposal

The UN Secretary-General, António Guterres, has also acted. In line with spokesperson Stephane Dujarric, Guterres recently called up India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and placed his “good offices” at disposal to mediate and facilitate peace.

Though the UN secretary general will not visit the region in the near future, his office emphasized that both countries need to agree to allow such mediation activities to proceed.

India-Greece Relations and Strategic Cooperation

Sekeris also noted the strong bilateral relationship between Greece and India as an “excellent cooperation.” External Affairs Minister Jaishankar appreciated the strong Greek response to cross-border terrorism earlier this week and renewed the emerging strategic partnership.

“We also have cordial relations with Pakistan and would like to remain neutral. Being UNSC president, we would make sure any discussion on Indo-Pak tensions stays within mandate,” Sekeris asserted.

UNSC Prepared for Possible Meeting

The president of the UNSC made it clear that if a formal request is put forth, the Council stands willing to take it up. He went on to say that some of the bigger member states are already in touch with both countries unofficially to mediate.

“If the situation does not calm down, an extraordinary UNSC meeting may become unavoidable. We stand ready,” he added.
