Delhi Election Date: ECI to Announce Assembly Elections Schedule Today
The Election Commission of India (ECI) is set to announce the election schedule for the Delhi Legislative Assembly on Tuesday at 2 pm. With the current 70-member assembly’s term ending on February 23, elections must be conducted before this date to form a new government.
The announcement by the ECI will mark the enforcement of the Model Code of Conduct. During the 2020 Delhi Assembly elections, the schedule was unveiled on January 6, with polling on February 8 and results declared on February 11.
The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which claimed landslide victories in the 2015 and 2020 elections by winning 67 and 62 seats respectively, is aiming for a third consecutive term. Meanwhile, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which struggled to make significant inroads in the past two elections, and the Congress, ousted from power after a 15-year rule, will be contesting separately this time.
Despite their alliance during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections in Delhi, AAP and Congress are poised to compete directly against each other in these Assembly polls.
Delhi’s assembly elections have traditionally been conducted in a single phase. More details regarding polling dates and results are expected to be shared during the ECI’s announcement today.
