RCB ipl auction 2025: Strategy, Retentions, and Targets

The 2025 IPL Mega Auction held in Jeddah has been a focal point for all cricket fans, particularly those rooting for Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB). With a significant purse and an ambitious agenda, RCB aims to finally break their IPL title drought by assembling a well-rounded squad.

Auction Dynamics and RCB’s Retained Core

RCB retained three key players ahead of the auction: Virat Kohli (₹21 crore), Rajat Patidar (₹11 crore), and Yash Dayal (₹5 crore). With these players in the mix, RCB is left with a strong auction purse of ₹83 crore—the second-largest among all teams, giving them flexibility to pursue top talents.

The franchise has also secured three Right-to-Match (RTM) cards, which could help them retain former players during the bidding.

Key Needs and Auction Strategy

RCB’s primary goal will be to address the gaps that have hindered their performances in previous seasons. Some of their crucial requirements include:

  1. Captaincy Successor and Top Order Stability
With Faf du Plessis not retained, RCB may target a high-caliber batter who could also take over leadership duties in the future. KL Rahul, a local favorite, could be an ideal pick, offering a combination of captaincy potential and top-order reliability.
  2. Explosive Middle Order
RCB will look to bolster their middle order by targeting players like Rachin Ravindra, a versatile New Zealander, or Abhinav Manohar, who recently impressed in the Maharaja T20 Trophy.
  3. Spin Support
Bengaluru’s Chinnaswamy Stadium has often been challenging for bowlers, particularly spinners. RCB could aim to bring back Yuzvendra Chahal, IPL’s leading wicket-taker, or consider a proven international spinner like Adil Rashid.
  4. Death Over Specialists
Adding depth to their bowling arsenal is crucial, and pacers like Naveen-ul-Haq and Lockie Ferguson could offer solutions in the death overs. These bowlers have shown exceptional control in high-pressure scenarios.

Potential Targets

Apart from the above names, RCB could explore other players to fill specific roles:

  • Finishing Power: Glenn Maxwell could be retained using an RTM card, given his ability to change games with both bat and ball.
  • Young Talent: Indian talents like Akash Deep and Mahipal Lomror could provide bench strength and versatility.
  • Foreign Stars: Power hitters like Jos Buttler may be considered to add firepower alongside Kohli at the top.

Challenges and Opportunities

RCB’s historical tendency to focus heavily on marquee players often left their squad with imbalances. This year, the management may adopt a more measured approach, balancing investments across all departments. With a strong purse and strategic planning, the franchise can aim to rectify past missteps and emerge as a serious contender for the title.

Fan Anticipation

RCB fans, known for their unwavering loyalty, are buzzing with speculation about potential buys. The management’s decisions at the auction table could determine whether the team transforms into a title-winning unit or remains a star-studded yet underperforming franchise
