UPI Down: Major Outage Hits Paytm, PhonePe, and Google Pay Users Across India

UPI Down

UPI server down reports surfaced on Saturday morning, with the outage being tracked on social media platforms as millions of users across India tried to carry out digital payments. Digital payment applications like Paytm, PhonePe, and Google Pay saw severe disruptions on account of one major technical breach that affected UPI services across the length and breadth of the country.

At midday, Downdetector received over 1,100 complaints, with Google Pay users reporting 96 issues and Paytm users reporting 23. The UPI server down situation affected some of the country’s leading banks, HDFC Bank, State Bank of India, and Kotak Mahindra Bank, causing immense inconveniences.

In a post on X, the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) confirmed the disruption:

“NPCI is currently facing intermittent technical issues that are leading to partial UPI transaction declines. We are working on the resolution of the issue and will keep you updated. Sorry for the inconvenience.”

This hasn’t been the first time the users were put through UPI down woes. A similar outage previously bedeviled UPI service for some hours on March 26, causing insecurity among consumers and businesses alike.

With UPI being the backbone of digital payments in India, any instance of UPI down halts major financial activities. Shopping, sending money, and paying bills have all been kept on hold with this failure.

The recent outage comes on the heels of NPCI’s recent regulatory changes on April 8, instituting new security norms for international UPI transactions. In doing so, the NPCI has attempted to tighten protocols for cross-border transactions, but questions have arisen about UPI’s technical stability.

As they say, necessity is the mother of invention; with the country’s increasing dependence on cashless transactions, these recurrent UPI down episodes stress the urgent need for a stable infrastructural setup, robust cybersecurity, and instant communication during service interruptions.

The latest UPI down experience reminds us of the importance of seamless digital payment systems in the present economy while users remain hopeful for full restoration. source businesstoday
