Axar Patel questions the Impact Player rule, saying it reduces the role of all-rounders as teams shift towards specialists in the IPL.

Delhi Capitals captain Axar Patel has voiced his reservations about the Impact Player rule, stating that he is “not a fan” of the regulation as it reduces the value of genuine all-rounders in modern T20 cricket. Speaking ahead of the upcoming Indian Premier League season, the Indian all-rounder explained that the rule encourages teams to rely more on specialists rather than multi-dimensional players who contribute with both bat and ball.

Patel highlighted that one of the traditional strengths of T20 cricket has been the importance of balance within a playing XI. All-rounders often provided flexibility in both batting and bowling departments, allowing captains to adjust strategies mid-game. However, with the Impact Player rule in place, teams can substitute a batter for a bowler or vice versa, reducing the necessity of maintaining that balance from the start. According to Patel, this tactical shift diminishes the role of players who bring multiple skills to the table.

Injury, not rule, behind reduced bowling workload

Patel clarified that his own reduced bowling workload in the previous season was not directly linked to the rule. He revealed that a finger injury sustained around the time of the Champions Trophy limited his ability to bowl effectively. As a result, he had to carefully manage his workload during the early stages of the tournament to avoid aggravating the injury.

Once the finger healed midway through the competition, Patel resumed bowling more regularly and regained confidence in his role as a frontline spin option. He emphasized that his performance decisions were based on fitness and recovery, not tactical changes related to the Impact Player regulation.

Tactical flexibility vs team balance

The Impact Player rule was introduced to add an extra layer of strategy by allowing teams to substitute a player during the match. While this has led to more aggressive batting approaches and specialist roles, Patel believes it alters team composition significantly. Franchises can now field an additional batter in the first innings and replace them with a bowler later, or vice versa, depending on match situations.

Patel suggested that such flexibility can reduce opportunities for developing all-rounders, as teams may prioritize specialists who excel in a single discipline. He noted that over time, this could influence how squads are built and how young players shape their skill sets.

Adaptability remains key

Despite his concerns, Patel made it clear that he is willing to adapt to whatever role the team requires. Known for his versatility, he has batted at various positions in T20 cricket and has delivered crucial spells with the ball in different phases of the game. His focus, he said, remains on contributing to the team’s success regardless of tactical changes.

As the debate around the Impact Player rule continues, Patel’s comments reflect the perspective of many all-rounders who believe the regulation could reshape the dynamics of T20 cricket. Whether the rule evolves or remains unchanged, its long-term impact on team strategies and player development will remain a key talking point heading into IPL 2026.
