PM Modi Render Support to Myanmar for Calamitous Earthquake; India Initiates ‘Operation Brahma’

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep sorrow and assured India’s full support to Myanmar after the country suffered a great deal in the last Friday’s earthquake of 7.7 magnitude that devastated and stole the lives of many. PM Modi’s reconfirmation came on the heels of a conversation with Myanmar’s military junta chief Senior General Min Aung Hlaing.

India Sends Emergency Relief through ‘Operation Brahma’

India, as part of accelerated humanitarian engagement, sent his delivery to Myanmar on Saturday. In an official ceremony, India’s envoy to Myanmar, Abhay Thakur, symbolically presented the first consignment of relief supplies to the Chief Minister of Yangon U Soe Thein: The assistance included necessities such as tents, blankets, sleeping bags, food packets, hygiene kits, generators, and significantly emergency medical supplies.

Randhir Jaiswal, spokesperson for the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), shared an update on X, saying: “Operation Brahma: India hands over the relief material to Myanmar. The first consignment of relief material has been formally handed over to Chief Minister of Yangon U Soe Thein by Ambassador Abhay Thakur in Yangon today.”

The devastating earthquake that struck Myanmar on Friday has caused devastation statistically, where the death toll has crossed 1,002, according to state broadcaster MRTV. The tremors have reached all rural villages and big cities as well as Bangkok, the capital of Thailand, and China’s Yunnan province.
