In a significant move ahead of the upcoming Indian Premier League 2026 season, the Delhi Capitals have appointed former Ireland all-rounder John Mooney as their new fielding coach. The appointment marks a historic milestone, as Mooney becomes the first Irish national to join the coaching staff of an IPL franchise.

A Fresh Addition to DC’s Coaching Setup

Mooney replaces Gnaneswara Rao and Anton Roux, who previously handled fielding responsibilities for the franchise. He will now be part of a revamped support staff led by head coach Hemang Badani, alongside bowling coach Munaf Patel, assistant coach Ian Bell, and director of cricket Venugopal Rao.

Rich Coaching Experience

The 44-year-old brings considerable international coaching experience to the table. He previously served as Afghanistan’s fielding coach between 2018 and 2019, including during their historic Test debut in India. Mooney has also worked with the West Indies men’s team and briefly coached the Ireland women’s side.

A Proven International Career

Before transitioning into coaching, Mooney enjoyed a solid playing career with Ireland. He represented his country in 64 ODIs and 27 T20 Internationals between 2006 and 2015, featuring in multiple ICC tournaments including three ODI World Cups and two T20 World Cups.

After retiring, he further strengthened his credentials by completing Level 1, 2, and 3 coaching certifications from the England and Wales Cricket Board.

Delhi Capitals Eye Improvement in IPL 2026

The Capitals are aiming for a stronger campaign after finishing fifth in the previous season and narrowly missing out on the playoffs. With strategic changes in both squad and support staff, the franchise will look to enhance its fielding standards—an area that could prove crucial in tight matches.

Delhi Capitals are set to begin their IPL 2026 campaign on April 1 against Lucknow Super Giants, as they chase their maiden IPL title.
