James Foster Set to Join Chennai Super Kings as Fielding Coach for IPL 2026
The Chennai Super Kings are set to strengthen their coaching setup ahead of the next season of the Indian Premier League, with former England wicketkeeper-batter James Foster expected to join the franchise as their fielding coach for IPL 2026. The appointment will see Foster working under long-time head coach Stephen Fleming as CSK look to bounce back from a disappointing campaign last season.
CSK Look to Rebuild After Tough Season
The five-time IPL champions endured a difficult run in the previous season, finishing at the bottom of the table with only four wins in 14 matches. The franchise is now making strategic changes to its support staff and squad to rebuild and return to title-contending form.
Confirming the development, CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan said the franchise had been actively searching for a specialist fielding coach.
“We have been looking for a fielding coach. I am hopeful he will join us,” Viswanathan said.
Foster is expected to officially assume his new role later this month.
Foster Brings Extensive Coaching Experience
The 45-year-old represented the England national cricket team in seven Tests, 11 ODIs, and five T20Is between 2001 and 2009. After retiring from professional cricket, Foster transitioned into coaching and has built a reputation as one of the most respected fielding specialists in franchise cricket.
He previously served as the fielding coach for the Kolkata Knight Riders and has also worked with several other global T20 franchises, including:
-
Desert Vipers in the ILT20
-
Northern Superchargers in The Hundred
-
Peshawar Zalmi in the PSL
His addition is expected to strengthen CSK’s fielding standards and bring fresh energy to the squad.
CSK Coaching Setup for IPL 2026
Foster will join an experienced support staff that already includes several former international cricketers:
-
Head Coach: Stephen Fleming
-
Batting Coach: Michael Hussey
-
Bowling Coach: Eric Simons
-
Assistant Bowling Coach: Sridharan Sriram
-
Fielding Coach: Rajiv Kumar
-
Team Manager: Russell Radhakrishnan
Pre-Season Camp Underway
Meanwhile, the franchise has already begun its pre-season training camp for Indian players at the team’s high-performance centre. Several domestic players, including legendary captain MS Dhoni and youngster Ayush Mhatre, are currently attending the camp.
Players who are part of the national team setup, such as Sanju Samson and Shivam Dube, will join the preparations later. All-rounder Shreyas Gopal is also expected to report to the camp after completing his Ranji Trophy commitments.
Blockbuster Trade Adds to CSK’s Plans
In addition to coaching changes, CSK have also made headlines with a blockbuster trade involving the Rajasthan Royals. In a surprising swap deal, the franchise traded star all-rounders Ravindra Jadeja and Sam Curran to bring in Sanju Samson.
Samson is currently enjoying a stellar run in international cricket, recently smashing a *match-winning 97 against the West Indies national cricket team**, helping India reach the semifinals.
Aiming for a Strong Comeback
With a refreshed coaching setup, strategic squad changes, and a strong pre-season camp underway, the Chennai Super Kings are clearly determined to bounce back strongly in IPL 2026.
The arrival of James Foster could prove to be a crucial step in improving the team’s fielding standards as the five-time champions look to reclaim their place among the league’s elite.
