Bangladesh produced a commanding performance in the opening match of the ODI series in Dhaka, defeating Pakistan by eight wickets in a one-sided contest. A brilliant bowling display from young pacer Nahid Rana and an aggressive unbeaten half-century by Tanzid Hasan Tamim ensured that the hosts took a comfortable 1–0 lead in the series.
Pakistan Start Steadily Before Collapse
After winning the toss and electing to bat first, Pakistan looked steady in the early overs. Openers Sahibzada Farhan and debutant Maaz Sadaqat started cautiously but managed to find the boundary on a few occasions. Farhan looked confident early on, striking two boundaries off Taskin Ahmed in the third over, while Sadaqat registered his maiden ODI boundary against Mustafizur Rahman in the following over.
For the first ten overs, Pakistan appeared to be building a solid platform. However, the momentum shifted dramatically once Nahid Rana was introduced into the attack.
Nahid Rana’s Fiery Spell Dismantles Pakistan
Rana made an instant impact in his very first over. With the last ball of the 10th over, he dismissed Farhan, who mistimed a shot and was caught at point. That breakthrough triggered a dramatic collapse in Pakistan’s batting lineup.
The young pacer bowled with pace and aggression, picking up wickets in each of his first five overs. He dismissed Shamyl Hussain shortly after a dropped chance, preventing the batter from capitalizing on the reprieve. Rana then removed Maaz Sadaqat, who top-edged a pull shot while attempting to counter a sharp bouncer.
Pakistan’s middle order failed to resist the pressure. Captain Mohammad Rizwan edged behind to the wicketkeeper, and Salman Agha clipped a delivery straight to short leg, giving Rana his fifth wicket and completing a memorable five-wicket haul.
Miraz and Others Finish the Job
While Rana caused the initial damage, Mehidy Hasan Miraz ensured Pakistan had no chance of recovery. Miraz dismissed Abdul Samad caught behind before producing a brilliant over in which he trapped Hussain Talat and Shaheen Afridi lbw.
Taskin Ahmed also chipped in by removing Mohammad Wasim Jr, leaving Pakistan struggling at 82 for 9.
A small resistance came from Faheem Ashraf and Abrar Ahmed, who added 32 runs for the final wicket, with Faheem doing most of the scoring. However, Mustafizur Rahman eventually ended the stand, bowling Pakistan out for 114 in 30.4 overs.
Bangladesh Cruise in the Chase
Chasing a modest target of 115, Bangladesh lost Saif Hassan early in the innings. However, any hopes of a Pakistani comeback quickly faded as Tanzid Hasan Tamim launched an aggressive counterattack.
Tamim dominated the powerplay, striking multiple boundaries and putting pressure back on the Pakistani bowlers. He attacked both pace and spin, smashing Mohammad Wasim Jr for a six and a four in a single over. His partner Najmul Hossain Shanto also played positively, hitting three consecutive boundaries off Shaheen Afridi.
The introduction of spin through Abrar Ahmed did little to slow Bangladesh down, as Tamim greeted him with two towering sixes. Bangladesh raced to 81/1 by the end of the powerplay, effectively putting the match beyond Pakistan’s reach.
Tamim brought up his half-century in style, reaching the milestone off just 32 balls, highlighting the dominance of Bangladesh’s batting during the chase.
Comfortable Finish for the Hosts
The 82-run partnership between Tamim and Shanto almost sealed the match before Pakistan managed a breakthrough. Wasim Jr eventually dismissed Shanto in the 14th over, but by then the result was virtually decided.
Bangladesh completed the chase in 15.1 overs, fittingly with a wide delivery from Wasim Jr that raced down the leg side.
